Man wanted for robbery in California is arrested in Arizona

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) - A man wanted on a felony warrant out of California has been arrested in Arizona. Lake Havasu City police say 29-year-old Randall Dieffenbacher Jr. is being held without bond. He's been transferred to the custody of the Mohave County Sheriff's Office pending extradition to California.

Sacramento pays $9.75M after baby dies in crash with officer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The city of Sacramento on Tuesday agreed to pay nearly $10 million to a couple whose 9-month-old son was killed when they were rear-ended by an unmarked police vehicle. Steve and Chrystal Saechao were stopped in heavy traffic on Interstate 80 in December 2013 when an off-duty officer driving his kids in a department-issued Ford Explorer hit them at about 60 mph (97 kph), the Sacramento Bee reported.

Eureka boy awarded for returning wallet, $2,512 cash

On Thursday afternoon 12-year-old Ty Rose of Eureka found a lost wallet and $2,512 in cash on Waterfront Drive and didn't think twice about turning it all in to the Eureka Police Department so it could be returned to its rightful owner. That random act of kindness earned the boy an EPD captain's challenge coin for excellence and a shout out from EPD interim Chief Steve Watson on Twitter.

Price, Killian go 7-0 on opening day of Governor’s Cup

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Harry Price of Australia and Christophe Killian of the host Balboa Yacht Club each went 7-0 Tuesday in the opening races of the 51st Annual Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship. The two skippers will face each other on Wednesday. Killian and Price finished third and fourth last year behind winner Nevin Snow of San Diego and the world's current top-ranked match racer, Sam Gilmour of Australia.

Funeral held for California boy, 5, alleged killed by father

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mourners including the boy's devastated mother gathered at a funeral service for a Southern California 5-year-old who police say was killed by his father after a family trip to Disneyland. The private funeral for Aramazd Andressian Jr. was held Tuesday at a church in South Pasadena.

California rescuers free humpback snagged by fishing anchors

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) - Rescuers off California have freed a badly tangled humpback whale caught by fishing anchors that were dragging it to the ocean floor. A whale-entanglement team, fishermen, and others rescued the whale Tuesday. Team leader Pieter Folkens says freeing the whale took nearly eight hours of cutting lines, buoys and anchors.

House to vote on Trump’s $1.6B border wall request next week

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans are moving next week to fund President Donald Trump's $1.6 billion request to begin construction of his oft-promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Aides said Tuesday evening that GOP leaders have decided to attach the money - to build 74 miles of fencing and levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and near San Diego - to a spending bill for the Defense Department and a handful of other agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Official: Fire will reach edge of California Gold Rush town

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - The Latest on wildfires burning in the U.S. West (all times local): 6:45 p.m. Fire officials say a wildfire burning in the rugged mountains outside of Yosemite National Park will reach the edge of a Gold Rush era town Tuesday evening. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean says the blaze jumped a highway earlier and is expected to get near Mariposa, a town of about 2,000 people near Yosemite.

Man charged with murder in death of alcohol rehab resident

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man who ran a live-in alcohol rehabilitation center in Los Angeles has been charged with killing a resident. Authorities on Tuesday say Jason Aviles of Long Beach is been charged with murder. Aviles ran the Grupo Renacer rehab center. Prosecutors say last August, Aviles blocked a resident's airway using tape and a spoon and stood on the chest of the agitated man.

The games of the 11th annual tournament will be held at Barclays Center on Nov. 20-21, it was announced Tuesday. Texas A&M and Oklahoma State renew a rivalry that began in 1917-18, but has not been played since 2011-12.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Latest on wildfires burning in California (all times local): 3:40 p.m. Fire officials say a wildfire burning in central California that is threatening 300 hundred structures and power lines that supply electricity to Yosemite National Park. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze near Lake McClure, a reservoir about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Modesto, is 5 percent contained.
