Councilman Calls For Review Of All LAPD Youth Programs Amid Growing Cadet Scandal

LOS ANGELES ( — City Councilman Mitch Englander is calling for a thorough investigation into all of the Los Angeles Police Department’s programs involving children, a day after an officer was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old female cadet. “First and foremost, before being a council member, I’m a father,” Englander said. “I have two daughters who have been involved in youth programs their whole lives.” Englander, a reserve police officer, says he is pushing for a very public, very thorough review of all of the LAPD’s youth programs, from how they’re run, who runs them to how they’re paid for and reviewed. “We gotta make sure parents feel safe when they’re sending their kids to these programs, particularly when the men and women are wearing a badge and a uniform,” he said. The council will consider Englander’s motion a day after LAPD Chief Charlie Beck personally arrested one of his own, 31-year-old Robert Cain, on suspicion of having sex with a 15-yea..

Report: Chargers Least Popular NFL Team, Rams Fifth Least Popular

LOS ANGELES ( — Starting at StubHub Center could turn out to be a smart move for the Los Angeles Chargers. According to a new report from financial news and opinion site 24/7 Wall St., the Chargers rank as the NFL’s least popular team. The study reviewed attendance data as recorded by ESPN to identify the least and most popular NFL teams. In their last season in San Diego in 2016 before announcing they will move to L.A. for the 2017 season, the Chargers averaged the lowest stadium attendance in the league. Last season, Qualcomm Stadium operated at 80 percent capacity with an average home attendance of 57,024. Rams fans shouldn’t get too excited about their new cross-town rival’s lack of popularity. The Rams ranked as the fifth least popular NFL team. Their home stadium of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum operated at 89.8 percent capacity with an average home attendance of 74,121. The Coliseum’s capacity is 93,607 while the StubHub Center will seat 27,000 for Chargers games. ..

LA18 To Replace Local Asian TV Programs With English Infomercials

LOS ANGELES ( — English infomercials will replace local TV programs aimed at the Chinese, Filipino, Spanish and Armenian communities on KSCI, Channel 18, after 30 years of being on the air. LA18 will also severely cut back on Korean programming, the station’s general manager confirmed. “We used to be an Asian language station for 30 to 40 years and we are changing our format now. We will still have a little Korean though,” General Manager Dennis Davis said. The changes will be implemented beginning July 1 and continue through late this year or early 2018, Davis said. He declined to offer any one specific reason for the format shift. The station has been through financial hardships in recent years and filed for bankruptcy in 2012 while laying off several dozen workers. At the same time, the federal auction of parts of TV stations’ channels to be reused for cell phone providers raised significant funds but reduced airwave availability. As of 2015, Los Angeles County was ho..

Tesla loses Apple hire from Autopilot team after just six months

Tesla Inc.’s team developing self-driving car capabilities lost a top engineer hired just six months ago from Apple Inc., adding to a spate of executive shakeups at tech companies competing to put autonomous-vehicle technology on the road. Chris Lattner, who left Apple in January and was vice president of the carmaker’s Autopilot software, was the hire Tesla touted earlier this year shortly after losing Sterling Anderson, the head of its Autopilot program. Within the last 10 months, Tesla, Uber Technologies Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo have each lost executives who led their respective self-driving efforts. “Turns out that Tesla isn’t a good fit for me after all,” Lattner wrote Tuesday on Twitter. In a statement, the company said “we’ve decided to make a change and added “we wish him the best.” Turnover is proving a challenge for companies in a fierce war for the engineering talent needed to develop autonomous vehicles. The auto industry and its regulators are counting on the tech..

Is California’s big investment in needy students paying off? Few signs yet that achievement...

California’s new system for funding public education has pumped tens of billions of extra dollars into struggling schools, but there’s little evidence yet that the investment is helping the most disadvantaged students. A CALmatters analysis of the biggest districts with the greatest clusters of needy children found limited success with the policy’s goal: to close the achievement gap between these students and their more-privileged peers. Instead, test scores in most of those districts show the gap is growing. Related Articles Here are the reading and math achievement gaps in 15 Southern California districts Struggling California school districts still lack basic tools for student success The test scores echo a broader and growing concern about the Local Control Funding Formula from civil rights groups, researchers and legislators. The formula implemented in 2013 sends more money to schools with higher concentrations of foster youths, kids learning English and students f..

LAPD Chief Suspends Cadet Volunteer Programs

LOS ANGELES ( — Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has suspended training for teen police volunteers at two divisions where cadets suspected of stealing department cruisers were based. The LAPD said Sunday that the suspensions are part of a thorough review of the program and policies for managing inventory. Three teenagers in the program for those who may want to become officers stole three patrol vehicles June 14. The trio led officers on wild pursuits that ended with crashes. One of the SUVs hopped a curb and crashed into a building in the area of 77th and San Pedro streets. A neighbor told CBS2 he saw two teens exit the cruiser and run. The second SUV crashed into another car a few miles away, at South Central Avenue and East Adams Boulevard. The woman driving the car was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Beck said two boys and a girl ages 15, 16 and 17 used a vacationing sergeant’s name to take the cars from a stationhouse parking lot. Police are investi..

Rams Ship No. 2 Overall Pick Greg Robinson To Lions

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Greg Robinson, the Los Angeles Rams No. 2 overall pick in 2014, is thankful to have a fresh start that the Detroit Lions were desperate to give him. “It’s really refreshing,” Robinson said. Detroit attempted to bolster its offensive line, to make up for the potential loss of tackle Taylor Decker, by acquiring Robinson from the Los Angeles Rams. “It was a big surprise,” Robinson said Thursday morning. “I found out last night. Quick turnaround, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity.” The trade for Robinson, for an undisclosed draft pick, and adding free agent Cyrus Kouandjio seem to be signs the Lions are bracing for at least starting the season without Decker protecting Matthew Stafford’s blind side. Decker is out indefinitely after an offseason injury led to shoulder surgery. “It has no bearing on that,” Detroit coach Jim Caldwell insisted. “The doctors will let us know how that goes. He’ll keep working at it.” Lions offensive line coach Ron Prince stood b..

Rams, Chargers and now the Clippers? Inglewood approves arena talks

"This is like a promise ring that we hope will lead to an engagement that we hope will lead to a marriage," said Inglewood Mayor James Butts. Citing the city's success in securing the stadium that will house the Rams and Chargers starting in 2020, Butts expressed confidence about Thursday's deal. "Our expectation is it will culminate in an NBA arena in the city of Inglewood," he said. Before that happens, the Clippers have to design their new home, secure permits and pass environmental reviews. (In the case of the NFL stadium Inglewood's council voted to bypass the California Environmental Quality A..

Rams trade LT Greg Robinson to Lions

With a new coaching regime in place, major change was inevitable for the Los Angeles Rams. And it hasn’t taken Sean McVay and his staff long to execute those changes. Hours after the Rams concluded their mandatory minicamp on Wednesday – thus ending their offseason workout program – they traded offensive tackle Greg Robinson to the Detroit Lions for a conditional draft pick. Robinson has been a major disappointment since being drafted second overall in the 2014 draft, never coming close to living up to expectations as the Rams’ cornerstone left tackle they envisioned. His time with the club was tenuous, at best after they opted this offseason not to pick up his fifth-year option for next year and after they signed veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth in free agency. But there was hope a move to right tackle would settle him down and he’d at least develop into an average blocker this year. But that hope was short lived, and not long after the start of OTA’s Robinson was displaced as..

Los Angeles Close to Getting Olympic Games, But When?

LOS ANGELES ( — It was good news for the City of Angels Friday, as it was announced that Los Angeles is one of two cities currently in the running to host the upcoming Olympic Games. Now, the question is, “When?” The executive board of the International Olympic Committee announced it might soon be naming the host cities for the 2024 and 2028 Olympics at the same time. Los Angeles joins Paris in its bid for the games. Perhaps intending to allude to the quest for the gold, IOC President Thomas Bach said at a press conference Friday, “The situation of these candidature for 2024, having two such great cities and such great countries, having two candidatures which are really enthusiastic and really promoting the Olympic Games and Olympic Spirit in a great way — this represents a golden opportunity for the Olympic Games and the IOC.” The strengths of L.A. and Paris lie “in the way they are planning to use a record number of existing and temporary facilities,” said Bach. “This ..
